We are looking for Seasonal and Full Time Mechanics deploying to Greenland and Alaska for 2-4 months. These positions support operations at various sites in the Arctic to maintain and operate facilities for the National Science Foundation research in the Arctic. Responsible for skilled service diagnostics and repair work on a variety of motorize vehicles, heavy equipment, power generation equipment and small motorized equipment. Additionally, routinely uses a computer to track and report progress of work activities.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following list is an overview of basic tasking.Perform any combination of the following: install, maintain, inspect, trouble-shoot, diagnose, and repair a variety of motorized vehicles including Caterpillar, Tucker, snowmobiles, and power generation equipment using computerized diagnostic software and basic diagnostic tools.Monitor maintain and repair station power Monitor and maintain building facilities that include structural, minor electrical, plumbing, heating systems and appliances. Perform fueling operations, inspections and maintenance for station fuel system, bulk storage, and Air National guard Aircraft operations.Maintain service records in CMMS. Complete weekly reports.Maintain inventory records and provide resupply informationPrioritize tasking to meet station needs in coordination with onsite and off-site managers. to prepare mechanical equipment for retrograde according to hazardous regulations for aircraft movement.Use testing meters and other materials, tools, and methods used in the inspection, repair, replacement, and Installation of a wide variety of electrical equipment.Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Employee will be trained on the maintenance database.Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines.Report all incidents (injury, illness, near miss, property damage, etc.) immediately to the Station Site Supervisor.As member of sustaining crew, fulfill role in Emergency Response Team.Assist with station or camp operations, maintenance and house mouse tasking as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications (Prior to Employment): Education and Experience: Minimum of 5 years maintenance & repair experience on heavy equipmentExperience maintaining and operating power generation equipmentProficient with diagnostic software, tools, and techniquesFamiliar with basic office programsAble to work independently and with others as requiredLicensure(s)/Certifications/Travel Documents: Must possess a current and valid State issued driver's license with insurable Department of Motor vehicle record (parking violations, minor driving offenses excluded) as determined by PFS's insurance providerOther Requirements: Authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Polar Field Services cannot sponsor employment-based work visas.Must be able to read, write and understand document, manuals, and instructions in EnglishRegular and predictable onsite attendance as well as availability to work extended hours, including afterhours/weekends and on-call.Possession of current and valid US passport Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working in field repairs and maintenanceExperience working in remote locationsRequirements/Training (Post-Employment):Some or all the following may be required.General Safety AwarenessCompletion of a certified OSHA 10 Hour course and possession of current OSHA card is required.Wilderness First Responder Certification (Winter Crew Only)WFA, or WFR certificationGeneral Behaviors and Competencies Required: Quality of Work - Work must reflect thoroughness, accuracy, and care in presentation. Travel can be to locations including several sites in Alaska and Greenland Work Environment/ConditionsThis position requires travel and deployment to remote field sites for work assignments. Outdoor working conditions are challenging, and temperatures may be extreme and exceed -40F. When at field sites, employees will sleep in tents, dorms, or other types of community housing. Food may come from restaurants, self-made or from a cook. Showers, laundry, and other typical amenities may be restricted or eliminated. Transport may include but is not limited to aircraft, trucks, and snow machines.Work may be performed at high altitude.HSEAdheres to Health, Safety and Environment policies in planning and execution of activitiesUse of hand tools and power toolsPhysical Demands/Requirements: Please note: This position requires you to "physically qualify" (PQ). This means you must pass the National Science Foundation required physical/dental exams and drug screen prior to deployment.Able to move items up to 50lbs independently and 50+ lbs. with mechanical assistanceAble to frequently shovel snowAbility to hike off trail, long distances, on uneven terrain, at remote locations, in all types of weather, carrying packs weighing up to 40lbs.Ability to withstand exposure to fumes, dust, and noise. Field work may require frequent exposure to Toxicodendron (e.g. poison ivy and poison oak), ticks, biting insects and other natural hazards.Ability to climb stairs and ladders Ability to wear hard hats, steel-toes boots, and other PPE when requiredBenefits: Hourly Health & Welfare benefit credit applied to first 40 hours worked each week.
